About China Beach

China Beach, a secluded coastal haven within Juan de Fuca Provincial Park on Vancouver Island’s South Island, offers a pristine escape 75 km from Victoria. This sandy beach, framed by towering Sitka spruce and crashing waves of the Juan de Fuca Strait, provides a serene retreat with views of the Olympic Mountains. A 1-km trail through lush rainforest leads to the beach, where driftwood and tide pools create a natural playground. The second China Beach, a smaller cove nearby, adds to the area’s charm with its rocky shoreline. Perfect for a quiet day by the ocean, China Beach delivers raw coastal beauty and tranquility, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers seeking solitude near British Columbia’s capital.

China Beach, part of Juan de Fuca Provincial Park established in 1996, spans a section of the park’s 47-km coastline in the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation, who have lived in the area for millennia, using the coast for fishing and harvesting. The beach was named after the China Clipper ships that sailed past in the 19th century, carrying goods to Asia. The park’s China Beach Campground offers 78 vehicle-accessible sites, open May to September, with amenities like picnic tables and pit toilets. The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, accessible from the beach, stretches 47 km to Botanical Beach, offering a multi-day hike with backcountry campsites. The area is a prime spot for whale-watching, with orcas and humpbacks passing by, and storm-watching in winter, when waves can reach dramatic heights.
